DIE KERNIDEE
Eine Präposition zeigt die Beziehung zwischen ihrem Nomen und dem Rest des Satzes. Lies die Präposition immer zusammen mit dem folgenden Wort.

01What does a preposition actually do?
In Chinese, word order and context words like 在 or 给 often do the connecting work. English uses small words placed before a noun phrase — in the morning, on the table, at school — to show how that phrase relates to the rest of the sentence: when, where, how, or in which direction. The preposition plus its noun works as one unit of meaning.
That is why translating a preposition alone rarely works. There is no single Chinese word that always equals at, and no English preposition that always equals 在. Ask instead: what relationship is this sentence describing? A point in time, a surface, a destination? The answer points you to the right word.
02Build one sentence, piece by piece
Take a normal morning: I drink coffee at a café in the morning. The core action is drink coffee. The phrase at a café tells you where the action happens, and in the morning tells you when. Remove either phrase and the sentence still works — prepositional phrases add information to a complete core.
I drink coffee at a café in the morning.
at + place · in + part of the day
I drink coffee at a café in the morning.
03Your first core set
Start with in, on, and at: the three words that cover most time and place situations. Add to for direction and recipients, for for purpose and benefit, and of for belonging and parts. With just these six, you can already build hundreds of everyday sentences — they are the highest-frequency prepositions in English.
Later, add with for tools and company, by for transport and methods, about for topics, and from for origins. Learn each one inside a short phrase you can actually say — on Monday, for you, by bus — rather than as an isolated translation. A phrase carries the grammar with it.
04A study order that builds understanding
First, label the time, place, and direction in three sentences about your own day. Next, compare in, on, and at using the same noun — in the corner, on the corner, at the corner mean three different things. Finally, change just one preposition and ask whether the sentence changes meaning or becomes wrong for the situation.
Return to a sentence the next day without looking at its translation and explain your choice aloud before checking. The goal is to recognize the relationship in the sentence, not to memorize one Chinese gloss per word. Use the comparison guides whenever two answers seem equally plausible.
