THE IDEA TO KEEP

The noun does not choose the preposition alone. Ask what the sentence is doing with the place: containing it, touching it, or pointing at it.

A little context makes the meaning easier to see.

01One corner, three meanings

Stand in the corner and the walls surround you — you are inside the room's corner. The café is on the corner: the building sits at the edge where two streets meet, touching that piece of land. Meet me at the corner: the corner is just a pin on the map where two people find each other. The noun never changed; the relationship did.

Meet me at the corner of the street.

at + meeting point

Meet me at the corner of the street.

A meeting place is a point on the map.

The bank is on the corner.

on + building at street edge

The bank is on the corner.

A building sitting on that piece of land takes on.

02Let the verb guide you

Existence verbs like be, live, and stay ask where something is contained: live in Shanghai, stay in a hotel. Contact verbs and positions ask what touches what: lie on the bed, hang on the wall. Meeting and arrival verbs ask for a point: wait at the entrance, arrive at the gate. When two answers both look right, the verb is usually the tiebreaker.

03The time version of the same idea

Time works the same way, from small to big: at 7 o'clock is a pin on the timeline, on Monday is a circled day on the calendar, in July is a container you spend time inside. Learners who see the place picture first usually master the time picture in minutes, because the mental image transfers directly.

The deadline is on Monday morning.

on + day with modifier

The deadline is on Monday morning.

Days — even with morning attached — take on.

04Choose in context, then practice

Before choosing, ask two questions: how is the speaker picturing this place, and what is the verb doing with it? School can be at school (the meeting point), in school (inside the building), or to school (the destination). There is no single correct preposition for school — only the right one for this sentence.
